Dining Room

His 16 metre by 9 metre room was completely remodelled and decorated in around 1880 at the same time as the interior restoration works to the château. At the rear, an equestrian statue of the High Constable Olivier de Clisson, sculpted in 1892 by Emmanuel Frémiet. If you look up on the left, you will see the Clisson motto written in old French “pour ce qui me plest”.

woodAll around the room, sculpted panels are decorated with the Christian names of the wife, Herminie, and children of Duke Alain de Rohan. The oak panels were designed by the architect Henri Lafargue who was responsible for the interior layout at Josselin. He also designed the tiling, light fixtures, furniture and the fireplace where one can read Duke Alain’s Christian name.

This room offers us a marvelous representation of the decorative style so fashionable at the end of the 19th century, largely based on the Middle Ages.

On the buffet are 15th century Italian ceramicware plates and pots as well as a range of family silverware.

On the large table, three elements of a centre-piece dating back to the 18th century. The central element includes Chinese porcelain ornaments. The two others are decorated with Dresden china flowers ans people.

The other buffet, on the courtyard side, bears two Dutch porcelain vases from Delft as well as a statue representing Saint Elisabeth of Hungary.

Below the ceiling on either side of the room, coats of arms of families in Europe to which the Rohans were related.
